Looking to add another podcast to your list? The Social Security Administration (SSA) has launched its own podcast series named “SSA Talks,” aimed at highlighting the ins and outs of the government retirement program while starring several senior leaders from the Social Security Administration.

Its first episode, “New Hiring Initiative Will Improve Service,” aired on May 26 and featured SSA Acting Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi and Associate Commissioner for Operational Human Resources (HR) Services Janet Walker, who explained the federal agency’s hiring process, initiatives, strategies, and top goals.

The episode begins by explaining the SSA’s approach to recruiting and retaining staff, with Kijakazi connecting current low staffing levels to rising workloads and restrictive budgets within the agency. Kijakazi also links recruitment concerns to the growth of technology and automation, adding that the agency lacks the sufficient staffing to manage digital services while meeting with individuals in-person.

“We’re using technology to help where we can, but we need enough staff to interview people who come to our offices and to process any necessary changes for people who are receiving benefits,” said Kijakazi during the episode. “Online can eliminate face-to-face interaction to complete an application, but we still need employees to process the applications that were filed online.”

The episode goes on to add that with Congress’ increased funding budget of $14.1 billion, the Social Security Administration is set to hire close to 4,000 new employees and replace departing staff. As a result, Kijakazi expects to complete “50,000 more retirement claims and almost 130,000 more initial disability claims,” in 2023. The podcast closes with a peak at the next episode, titled “Will Social Security Be There When I Retire?”

Each podcast recording also comes with a transcript and a fact sheet for listeners to read along, and listeners can sign up for alerts that notify them once a new podcast episode is posted.

In addition to the podcast announcement, the SSA has released its new Communications Corner hub, where readers and listeners can learn more about Social Security and its programs. The hub includes the latest SSA press releases and links to other communication channels, including blogs, newsletters, program policy, and research.
