William Francis Galvin is an American Democratic politician and the 27th Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth, serving since January 1995—making him the longest‑tenured secretary in state history. A Brighton, Boston native, he graduated cum laude from Boston College (1972) and earned a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School (1975). William Galvin began his career as an aide to the Massachusetts Governor’s Council before winning a seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1975, where he served until 1991. Known as a leading election law expert and securities regulator, he oversees voter registration, corporate filings, public records, and historic preservation.
