National 401k Day 2019: PSCA Offers Awareness Game Plan for Plan Sponsors

This year’s National 401k Day promotion has a football theme

Please, save responsibly tonight as you celebrate National 401k Day.

Friday, Sept. 6, marks the 2019 celebration of “National 401k Day,” or more accurately but less simply, “National 401(k)/403(b) Day,” according to its official sponsor, the Plan Sponsor Council of America (PSCA).

The timing of National 401k Day—the first Friday after Labor Day—was created as a play on the concept that Monday kicks off the week with labor and the work week ends Friday with retirement.

As the day roughly coincides with the kickoff of football season, the 2019 promotional campaign theme (which PSCA says can be used any time during the year) is a coach’s handbook (not playbook?!?). It provides a game plan for building a campaign and offers additional suggestions about activities that plan sponsors can include in 401k Day events.

The campaign includes five pieces that collectively make up the handbook, which can be used as posters, flyers, email content, and website content.

Each module highlights different retirement savings concepts including enrollment, savings rates, investments, loans and hardship withdrawals, and planning retirement income.

PSCA says companies who want to utilize the materials can creating a weeklong event using a different theme each day, spread them out throughout the year, or create five stations to use in one day as they highlight their company’s retirement plan and build excitement with employees about saving for retirement.

The coach’s handbook includes online links to football-themed games and events that can tie in with plan sponsor communications.

PSCA is encouraging plan sponsors to tweet pictures of their 401k Day events using the hashtag #401kday!
